RIDDIM SEQUENCER

A thirty-two-step reggae sequencer with seven forms, eight tracks, ghost notes, track locks, controlled variation, A/B comparison, history and MIDI or JSON export.

Use the presets as structural starting points. Add low-velocity ghost notes to the gaps in rim, hat and percussion, lock the tracks that must stay, then compare complete two-bar states before export.

When this helps

Use the presets as structural starting points. Add low-velocity ghost notes to the gaps in rim, hat and percussion, lock the tracks that must stay, then compare complete two-bar states before export.

A free browser reggae riddim sequencer

RIDDIM SEQUENCER is a browser music tool for building reggae and dub riddims. Start with ONE DROP, ROCKERS or STEPPERS, add ghost notes and offbeat movement across eight tracks, then take the idea out as MIDI or JSON.

First five steps

  1. Choose one of the seven forms from ONE DROP to PSYCHEDELIC DUB.
  2. Compare FOUNDATION, SHUFFLE and TURNAROUND variations.
  3. Set BPM and press PLAY.
  4. Choose AUTO, RIM, HAT or PERC as the ghost target, set DENSITY and VELOCITY low, then press INJECT GHOSTS. Use EDIT GHOSTS to shape the rim, hat or percussion grid directly.
  5. Lock the tracks that must stay and choose a variation amount. Compare A/B states, adjust KEY, SWING and DUB SPACE, then export MIDI.

Basic controls

RIDDIM PRESET

Seven forms provide rule-based starting points from ONE DROP and STEPPERS to UK DUB, SKA and PSYCHEDELIC DUB.

VARIATION / LOCK

The L button protects a track from generation and CLEAR. SUBTLE, ROUGH and WILD control how much of the remaining pattern changes.

GHOST NOTES

Add low-velocity support hits to rim, hat and percussion. DENSITY controls how many appear, VELOCITY controls how quiet they are, and HUMANIZE adds small timing differences. Cyan outlines mark ghosts.

KEY / SWING / DUB SPACE

KEY transposes pitched parts, SWING delays even steps and DUB SPACE opens the pattern by changing density and decay.

STATE / EXPORT

Undo, history, favourites, A/B and share URLs preserve the full pattern. JSON is for reconstruction; MIDI is for a DAW.

Practical setups

One drop start

Use 76 BPM, ONE DROP and FOUNDATION. Keep the kick and snare on beat three and avoid overfilling the hats.

Steppers drive

Start near 90 BPM with STEPPERS. Keep the quarter-note kick and use only a small amount of swing.

Early digital

Use 88–100 BPM, EARLY DIGITAL and more DUB SPACE. Leave short, exposed repeats.

Save and export

MIDI contains performance data rather than audio. JSON and share URLs preserve the tool state. Assign drum, bass and keyboard instruments after importing MIDI into a DAW.

What this tool does not do

  • MIDI carries notes and timing, not the final instrument sound.
  • Choose instruments and finish the mix in your DAW.

FAQ

Is it free?
RIDDIM SEQUENCER is free to use in the browser.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Open the tool in a current browser to start.
Can I save or export the result?
MIDI contains performance data rather than audio. JSON and share URLs preserve the tool state. Assign drum, bass and keyboard instruments after importing MIDI into a DAW.
What should I try first if it does not work?
If imported MIDI is silent, assign an instrument to each track in the DAW.

Troubleshooting

  • If imported MIDI is silent, assign an instrument to each track in the DAW.
  • If it feels too fast, remove hat and percussion steps before lowering BPM.
  • If the reggae pocket disappears, check snare and bass placement before adding kicks.
  • After automatic generation, mute parts and create space instead of keeping every track.
  • If the groove feels busy, lower GHOST DENSITY and target RIM instead of using AUTO.
