HIP-HOP BEAT LAB

A thirty-two-step hip-hop beat maker with BOOM BAP, LATE POCKET, BROKEN SOUL, JAZZ DUST and DOUBLE TIME forms, lane-specific drift and velocity movement.

Do not line every hit up to the same point. Use swing as the base, then move kick, snare, hat and percussion by different small amounts across five groove patterns.

When this helps

Do not line every hit up to the same point. Use swing as the base, then move kick, snare, hat and percussion by different small amounts across five groove patterns.

A free browser hip-hop beat maker

HIP-HOP BEAT LAB is a browser music tool for building BOOM BAP and LATE POCKET beats. Adjust the timing of kick, snare, hat and percussion lanes, then save the fixed groove as JSON.

First five steps

  1. Choose BOOM BAP, LATE POCKET, BROKEN SOUL, JAZZ DUST or DOUBLE TIME and press PLAY.
  2. Raise SWING from 50% and add fixed, millisecond-scale timing differences for each lane with POCKET DRIFT.
  3. Use HUMANIZE for a tiny fixed-pattern correction and HAT DENSITY for space between hats.
  4. Press MAKE LATE POCKET to return to LATE POCKET, then edit the grid by ear.
  5. Use SAVE JSON to preserve the beat state. Audio is not included; finish the sound in a DAW.

Basic controls

STYLE

BOOM BAP starts with a straight core, LATE POCKET places lane-specific late offsets, BROKEN SOUL loosens the grid, JAZZ DUST lifts the gaps and DOUBLE TIME pushes the hats. These are approximation presets, not a copy of a specific beat.

SWING / POCKET DRIFT

SWING delays offbeats. POCKET DRIFT adds fixed, millisecond-scale timing differences to kick, snare, hat and percussion, so the lanes keep their own placement instead of scattering at random.

HUMANIZE / HAT DENSITY

HUMANIZE adds a tiny fixed-pattern correction and HAT DENSITY controls the number of hat hits. Move one at a time when the pocket starts to blur.

DRUM GRID

Thirty-two cells cover two bars. Bright cells are hits and the white line marks the playhead. Listen to each lane as a separate player rather than judging the grid alone.

Practical setups

Dusty boom bap

Use BOOM BAP at 88 BPM with 54% SWING. Tighten kick and snare, then place only a little percussion outside.

Late pocket

Use LATE POCKET at 84 BPM with 72% DRIFT. Remove a few hats and leave the late snare in place.

Broken soul

Use BROKEN SOUL at 76 BPM with more HUMANIZE. Keep the gaps before adding more hits.

Jazz dust

Use JAZZ DUST at 79 BPM with 60% SWING. Keep the hats uneven and let the percussion answer the snare.

Double time

Use DOUBLE TIME at 98 BPM with high HAT DENSITY. Reduce the kick count and listen to the space around the hats.

Save and export

SAVE JSON stores style, 32 steps, BPM, swing, drift, humanize and hat density. It does not include audio or samples.

What this tool does not do

  • This tool focuses on one sound or pattern task rather than final mixing.
  • Keep output level conservative before pushing feedback, drive or repeated effects.

FAQ

Is it free?
HIP-HOP BEAT LAB is free to use in the browser.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Open the tool in a current browser to start.
Can I save or export the result?
SAVE JSON stores style, 32 steps, BPM, swing, drift, humanize and hat density. It does not include audio or samples.
What should I try first if it does not work?
If the swing feels weak, raise POCKET DRIFT as well as SWING.

Troubleshooting

  • If the swing feels weak, raise POCKET DRIFT as well as SWING.
  • If the beat falls apart, lower HUMANIZE first, then bring DRIFT down.
  • If the hats are too busy, lower HAT DENSITY and listen to the space between kick and snare.
  • This is not a specific artist's original performance data. Edit the approximation into your own beat.
