OUTPUT
—The first is the chosen sound as it is. Variation range: MID (medium) (NEAR / MID / FAR in VARIATIONS). Names use letters, digits, _ and - only.
Using the sounds you make: fine for commercial games and videos. Credit is optional.
- Sounds made with CHIP SFX are free to use in games, videos, streams and more. Commercial games and monetized videos are fine.
- Credit is not required, but it is appreciated. Example: “SE: CHIP SFX (BARZINE LAB)”
- You may edit and process them freely. Sounds layered with others or finished in a DAW fall under the same terms.
- Please do not sell or distribute the generated sounds as they are as a sound-effects pack. Using them inside a game or video is fine.
- Please do not register the generated sounds with YouTube Content ID or any copyright collective. The same SEED makes the same sound, so a claim would reach other people's work.
- CHIP SFX uses no generative AI. It plays NES-style voices (pulse, triangle and noise) by numeric rules.
- BARZINE takes no responsibility for the results of using the sounds (see the Terms, in Japanese).
KEEP
0 soundsSounds you mark with ☆KEEP collect here. You can zip them together even across types. They are stored in this browser only.
Jump, coin, hit, explosion, laser, power-up, cursor, confirm, cancel, buzzer, 1UP and miss — one each from the current SEED. TWEAK values are not applied.
One sound of every type. Change the SEED and press again for a different full set. TWEAK values are not applied.
What CHIP SFX does
A tool that makes 8-bit game sound effects just by pressing a type: 67 of them, including coin, jump, laser, explosion, fire / ice / lightning magic and dub sirens. Grow similar sounds and export even numbered WAV sets.
It calculates three voices — pulse, triangle and noise — one sample at a time. It uses no generative AI. Every press lays out eight new sounds, and the same SEED gives the same sound as many times as you like. Grow similar sounds from the ones you like, shape them with the knobs, and take them out as WAV or ZIP.
How to use
- Pick a group in the TYPE tabs (ACTION, MAGIC, ITEM and so on), then press a type. It plays right away. Press the same type again to reroll.
- VARIATIONS lays out eight sounds made from the same SEED. Press the pads, or use keys 1–8 and the arrows, to compare them.
- Choose a sound you like and press MUTATE to get eight similar ones. NEAR, MID and FAR set how close they stay. BACK returns to the previous eight.
- Shape PITCH, LENGTH, SWEEP (pitch movement) and GRIT with TWEAK. It applies to all eight.
- ☆KEEP collects the sounds you like. You can zip them together even across types.
- Save one with WAV, eight with ZIP, or a set of slightly different numbered sounds like footstep ×6 with the numbered export.
- COPY URL shares the same sound, including type, SEED, knobs and mutations.
What each part does
TYPE
8 groups, 67 types. ACTION (17: jump, landing, footstep, laser, gunshot, explosion and more), MAGIC (fire, ice, lightning, wind, water, earth, light and dark, plus neutral, heal and charge), ITEM (coin, power-up and more), MENU (cursor, confirm, text and more), JINGLE (1UP, fanfare, game over and more), WORLD (alarm, heartbeat, door, thunder and more), DUB (dub siren, air horn and more) and DRUM (kick, snare, hat, clap).
SEED / NEW SET
The six-character value everything is generated from. Reroll with NEW SET or the input next to SEED. The same SEED and type always give the same eight.
VARIATIONS
Eight sounds from the same SEED to compare. Each pad shows its waveform. “Play 1→8 in order” lets you hear them straight through.
MUTATE / NEAR MID FAR
Nudges the numbers of the chosen sound to make eight similar ones. NEAR stays very close, MID keeps the character while the difference is audible, and FAR swings widely. Stacking pulls the sound toward your taste (up to 8 generations). “Hear the original” compares it with the pre-mutation sound.
TWEAK
PITCH is ±12 semitones, LENGTH is 0.4–2.2×, SWEEP is the size of the pitch movement (0 is still, 2 doubles it), and GRIT is roughness from sample-and-hold and bit reduction. Letting go of a knob rebuilds and plays the eight.
MODE (SMOOTH / 60FPS)
60FPS moves pitch and volume in the same 1/60-second steps as a real console driver. Sweeps become stairs, volume has 16 levels, and pitch rounds to the hardware register steps.
KEEP
Stores up to 64 sounds you like in this browser. Zip them across types; press one to open that sound again.
Numbered export
Uses the chosen sound as the first and saves 2–16 slightly varied sounds as name_01, name_02… For avoiding monotony when the same effect plays repeatedly. The variation range follows the NEAR / MID / FAR setting.
STARTER PACK / FULL PACK
STARTER PACK zips the 12 basic sounds (jump, coin, hit, explosion, laser, power-up, cursor, confirm, cancel, buzzer, 1UP, miss); FULL PACK zips one of every type, both from the current SEED. TWEAK values are not applied.
Keys
1–8 and ←→ to select, Space to play, A to play 1→8 in order, Esc to stop, K to keep, N to reroll, M for eight similar. Click inside the tool first.
Using the sounds
Fine for commercial games and videos. Credit is optional (example: SE: CHIP SFX (BARZINE LAB)). Please do not sell or distribute them as a sound-effects pack, or register them with Content ID and the like. Details are in “Using the sounds you make” on the page.
Recipes
Make six footsteps
Press STEP in ACTION and pick a sound you like. In the numbered export, set the count to 6 and the name to footstep, then save the ZIP. Switch the numbers in order or at random in your game to avoid monotony.
Find a coin sound
Press COIN and compare. When a good one appears, line up similar sounds with MUTATE. Pick one and stack more MUTATE to narrow it down.
Tell fire and ice apart
Choose FIRE and ICE in MAGIC. Raising SWEEP makes FIRE more forceful; raising PITCH makes ICE sound colder.
Get the stair-step hardware feel
Set MODE to 60FPS. Pitch movement in jumps and lasers turns into stairs and volume drops to 16 levels, closer to the original texture.
Make a rough sound
Raise GRIT. Explosions, impacts and hits get gritty through sample-and-hold and bit reduction.
A basic set for your game
Save the 12 basics at once with STARTER PACK. Fill the gaps with FULL PACK, or zip what you have kept.
Recreate the same sound later
Note it with COPY URL. The README.txt inside the ZIP also lists each sound's URL.
Saving and taking sounds out
WAV is 44.1 kHz, 16-bit, mono. The ZIP includes a README.txt listing each sound's recreation URL along with usage terms and a credit example. KEEP is stored in this browser's localStorage, so it does not carry over to another browser or survive clearing site data.
Troubleshooting
- If there is no sound, press PLAY again to lift the browser's audio restriction. On iPhone, also check the silent switch and the volume.
- To get back to the same sound, note it with COPY URL. It carries the type, SEED, TWEAK and MUTATE values. A URL made by an older version shows a notice.
- If MUTATE stops at 8 generations, go back with BACK or start fresh with NEW SET.
- If the ZIP fails, reload the page and export again. In the in-app browsers of X, Instagram and LINE, save from the share sheet with “Save to Files”.
- If it is too quiet, raise the device volume. Exported WAVs are normalized so the loudest part is about −10 dBFS.
- The fine knobs work on a phone too, but the key controls are for computers.
